China’s first restaurant chain to enact a smoking ban, Meizhou Dongpo, has had a dramatic reduction in business after enacting the new policy. One manager estimates that they are doing less than 80% of the business of surrounding establishments that haven’t enacted a ban. China’s government has voiced concerns that the country might have a bad image if the international community saw Chinese, spitting and smoking indiscriminately among other things, during the Olympics.
